Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 campaign with a 71-64 loss to Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon from Tarble Pavilion in the 14th Annual Tip-Off Tournament. The Garnet will play Hartwick College on Sunday in the consolation game and the Wildcats will play Oberlin in the championship game.
In a half that started competitive with six ties and six lead changes, Swarthmore (0-1) built a 38-24 lead heading into the break. The Garnet capped the strong half with a 24-10 run and shot 47.8 percent from the field. Senior
Elle Larsen had 11 points in the frame, while freshman
Hayley Raymond ended the half with seven and made a pair of free throws to give the Garnet their largest lead of the frame at 14 points going into halftime.
Swarthmore took its largest lead of the game when Larsen set up sophomore
Maggie O'Neil for a trifecta to make it 42-26 at the 18:10 mark, but the Wildcat defense embarked on a 24-1 run and did not allow the hosts to make another field goal until O'Neil hit another shot from downtown nearly eight minutes later. A layup by Caitlin Kenney gave Johnson & Wales a 45-43 advantage and a lead they would never give up the rest of the way.
Larsen finished with a double-double of 17 points and 13 boards to lead the way for the Garnet. Freshman
Melanie Ackerman hit two threes in the first frame and went on to total 14 in her collegiate debut.
O'Neil concluded the game with 16 points, seven boards and two blocks.
Johnson & Wales (1-0) came away with the season-opening victory after nearly doubling their shooting percentage in the second half to outscore the Garnet 47-26. The Wildcats were led by Kristen Habbel with 15 points, while Natalie DiCocco and Raquel Pederzani each had 13 points. Bobbie Whitehead grabbed 10 boards and Kenney swiped four balls for the Wildcats.
The consolation match will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, followed by the championship game at 3:00 p.m.
