Michael Stewart scored his third goal of the season as the Swarthmore College men's soccer team played Stevens to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Clothier Field.
Stevens (7-3-1), a 2013 NCAA Tournament participant, took the match's first three shots on target and found the back of the net in the 17th minute on a free kick. Patrick Masur sent a dangerous cross that was headed in by Kevin Callaway to give the Ducks an early 1-0 advantage.
The Garnet nearly netted an equalizer just minutes later, as
Billy Evers sent a short cross that was initially tapped by goalkeeper Mike Renna. The ball was deflected right to the foot of
Michael Stewart, but the senior's shot attempt from about eight yards out bounced off the left post and was cleared away. The teams went into the break with the Ducks ahead by a goal.
Swarthmore (6-4-2), however, was able to tie the match in the 58th minute. Stewart, who attempted six shots in the match, unleashed a rocket from the top of the box that landed in the upper right corner of the net.
Stevens nearly took the lead on a free kick in a waning minutes when Carson Pryor redirected a free kick. But after the shot was initially saved and bounced off the crossbar,
Ryan Meuth was able to help clear the ball and eventually send the match to overtime.
The Ducks controlled the first extra session and came within inches of scoring the golden goal on a hard shot by Pryor that bounced off the side netting of the goal. The Ducks also earned a corner kick shortly before the midway point that was mishandled by the front line. Swarthmore's Stewart also had another good look from the top of that hit off the near post.
Midway through the second overtime, the Garnet had back-to-back golden opportunities to put the match away. But
Wyatt McCall had a shot punched over the net by Renna, and Meuth's header on the ensuing corner sailed high and wide. The final whistle would sound five minutes later with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.
Zon made three saves between the pipes for Swarthmore, while Renna turned away three shots for the Ducks.
