Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Led by freshman
Sarah Wallace's attack, the Swarthmore College volleyball team extended it's win streak to nine matches with victories over McDaniel College (18-5, 3-3 CC) and Penn State Berks (13-8) on Saturday, Oct. 11 from Tarble Pavilion. With the victory over the Green Terror, Swarthmore improves to 6-0 in Centennial Conference play and after the win over the Nittany Lions, the team is 15-4 on the season.
Wallace swung a season-high 25 kills against McDaniel and hit .533 (18-2-30) against Penn State Berks to lead the Garnet offense. Junior libero
Madison Heppe anchored the defense in the first match with 22 digs, while freshman
Malia Scott and senior
Kate Amodei recorded 18 and 13 digs, respectively. Scott closed out the match with a double-double, adding 15 assists and four service aces. Junior setter
Sam DuBois set the offense with 38 assists to give freshmen
Alice Liu and
Bridget Scott a combined 23 kills against the Green Terror.
In the match with McDaniel, Swarthmore came out hitting .441 in the first set as Wallace and Scott put down six kills along with Liu swinging five. The score was close only in the opening points as the Garnet quickly built a 10-4 lead and would keep at least a five-point lead the remainder of the set.
Malia Scott's strong service led the Garnet to a 25-14 set victory.
The Garnet would take set two by a 25-21 score before McDaniel hit .325 in the third set, leading the entire way to force another set.
In the fourth set, McDaniel jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind aces from Reagan Folaron. The Green Terror took a 10-2 lead to force a Swarthmore timeout before the hosts reeled off 10 of the next 11 points to take a 12-11 lead. Neither team was able to open up a lead of more than four the rest of the way. Liu and
Bridget Scott each recorded kills for the 26th and 27th points for the Garnet victory.
McDaniel was led by Kloe Martin with 16 kills and 18 digs, while Maddie Moyer had 19 assists. At the net, Madeline Rose finished with a game-high five total blocks.
Against the Nittany Lions, the Garnet hit about .475 in the first and third sets to secure the straight set victory. Wallace recorded a team-high 18 kills, nine digs and three blocks, while senior
Chastity Hopkins swung nine kills. After hitting a season-high 12 kills against McDaniel, Liu swung another seven against the Nittany Lions. DuBois and
Malia Scott combined for 35 assists in the match.
Sophia Zhang finished with 10 kills, Jordan Heath set 28 assists to led the offense for Penn State Berks, while Cassidy Schultz and Megan DeAbreu had 10 and 12 digs, respectively, for the defense.
Swarthmore will return to action on Tuesday, October 14 hosting Ursinus College at 7 p.m. in a Centennial Conference matchup.
