Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Wyatt McCall scored his second goal of the season in the 105th minute to lift the Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Gettysburg on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Clark Field.
After two halves and an extra session of scoreless soccer, McCall received a pass from freshman
Marc Geschwind and netted the golden goal by firing a shot from the top of the box that deflected off a Bullet defender. The marker gave Swarthmore (7-4-2, CC 1-4) its first conference win of the season.
Neither team was able to penetrate the opposing defense and attempt a shot that went on target until the end of regulation when a strike by sophomore
Michael Swantek was saved by goalkeeper Max Karen in the 85th minute. Freshman
Alex Robey and senior
Michael Superdock also had shot attempts in the final minutes which were stopped by Karen that eventually forced overtime. After a header shot by junior McClean was stopped in the 97th minute, McCall provided the heroics in the second extra session to seal the final outcome.
Junior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon picked up the victory for Swarthmore without having to make a save, as the defense being anchored by Superdock and McClean yielded only nine shots that were all off target. Karen of Gettysburg (7-4-1, CC 1-3-1) suffered the loss after turning away four shots.
Swarthmore will return to Clothier Field to host McDaniel on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
