Women’s Basketball Races Past Dickinson

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Elle Larsen scored a game-high 21 points and fell just shy of a double-double as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team raced to a convincing 73-50 victory over Dickinson on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Tarble Pavilion.

Freshman Kelsey Walsh put Dickinson on the board on the first possession of the game by finishing a pass from classmate Helen Roberts, but the hosts responded with 11 unanswered and never looked back. Sophomore Abbey Deckard canned a 3-point field goal after grabbing Stephanie Lechich's missed shot from long range to start the hot streak for the Garnet. Senior Katie Lytle made three straight jump shots to cap the early run.

Swarthmore continued to suffocate Dickinson with its defense and did not allow the Red Devils to sink a field goal for nearly seven minutes until junior Sarah Phillips broke the dry spell with a good jumper that created a 12-6 score with 12:51 on the clock. The Garnet, however, would extend their lead to double figures multiple times before eventually taking a 28-19 lead into the recess.

Senior Kayla Moritzky set the tone of a strong second half for Swarthmore by canning a trey less than a minute into the frame before ballooning the lead to 18 points at 39-21 with 16:03 left on another 3-pointer, prompting the Red Devils to take a timeout. After missing two straight field goal attempts and committing three turnovers, Dickinson finally netted its first shot from the floor in the second half courtesy of a Liz Schultz layup with 14:45 on the clock.

Swarthmore (9-8, CC 4-7) kept its foot on the gas pedal for the remainder of the game and vaulted to a 27-point advantage by most notably getting some hot shooting from Erin Jenson. The six-foot freshman drained three shots from beyond the arc to stretch the defense in the late stages of the second half, including one set up by junior Chastity Hopkins that vaulted the Garnet to a 73-46 advantage with just over a minute left.

Larsen registered a game-high 21 points by shooting 9-for-17 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line to lead Swarthmore in the winning effort. She also corralled nine rebounds and was one of three Garnet players to block a shot. Lytle contributed 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Jensen netted a career-high nine points by going a perfect 3-for-3 from long range.

Dickinson (4-12, CC 1-10) was paced by Schultz's 10 points off the bench. Roberts added seven points and five rebounds.

Swarthmore (9-8, CC 4-7) will continue its push for a Centennial Conference postseason berth when it visits Washington College on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m.
