Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa. –
Chris Bourne scored 19 points and shot 75 percent from the floor, but the Swarthmore College men's basketball team fell to archrival Haverford by a 70-59 score in a Centennial Conference and Hood Trophy battle on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.
Swarthmore (5-11, CC 2-7) scored the first four points and six of the first 10, but Haverford seized control of what started off as a close contest by rattling off 11 straight. Sophomore Lucas Colombo capped the run with a good jumper while the Fords kept the Garnet off the scoreboard for more than five minutes.
After senior
Joe Keedy helped the visitors come within four at 17-13 around the midway point of the stanza, Haverford broke loose again and went ahead by double figures courtesy of a Louis Cipriano jump shot from the right corner that prompted a Garnet timeout with the scoreboard reading 26-15 and just over four minutes left. Sophomore Anthony Reyes hit a bucket on Haverford's last possession to help the host school maintain its 11-point advantage at the recess.
Haverford (6-8, CC 2-7) picked right up where it left off early in the second half. Junior Gibby Graves canned a jump shot to extend the lead to 14 and followed with a monster dunk shortly afterwards to create a 38-25 score and keep the momentum with the Fords. Senior
Jay Kober trimmed what was at one point a 17-point deficit down to nine by making a jumper with just over a minute remaining, but that was as close as the Garnet would come for the remainder of the game.
Bourne led Swarthmore in scoring with 19 points by shooting 9-for-12 from the floor and 1-for-2 at the line. Keedy notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Kober netted 12 in the losing effort.
Haverford, which picked up half a point in the Hood Trophy race, was paced by Cipriano and Graves. Cipriano contributed a game-high 21 points, and Graves finished with 15. Brett Cohen, a senior, registered a double-double with 10 and 10 boards to go along with three blocks.
Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 when it hosts Dickinson at 3 p.m.
