Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Jay Kober scored 16 points, but the Swarthmore College men's basketball team fell to Gettysburg by a 71-55 decision on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Bream Gymnasium.
Gettysburg started the game on a 5-0 run and built up a 17-12 advantage by the 10:56 mark when Mlynue Reeves hit one of two free throw attempts. However, Swarthmore hung around and rattled off eight straight while not allowing the Bullets to convert a field goal for a span of 4:31.
Kober nailed a 3-pointer to give the Garnet their first lead at 18-17 before freshman
Chris Bourne added a layup from the right side on the Garnet's next possession to put the visitors up by three. Sophomore
Seth Liebert assisted on both plays.
The teams would play the rest of the half evenly with two ties and three more lead changes. But a dunk by freshman Tanner Kirkpatrick broke a 25-all deadlock and gave the momentum to the Bullets, who led 33-29 at the break after a long 3-pointer by junior captain Sean Gordon was called back because it came after the buzzer.
Gettysburg's Kirkpatrick, whose dunk gave the hosts the lead for the remainder of the first half, set the tone in the second half by opening the second-half scoring with a 3-pointer with 18:17 to play. After Kober sank the Garnet's first field goal of the frame at the 15:41 mark, Kirkpatrick canned two more shots from downtown to put his team ahead by double figures at 44-32. The Garnet never came closer than 10 for the remainder of regulation.
Kober led Swarthmore by netting a team-high 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field, including 2-for-4 from long range, while going 2-for-3 from the line. He also grabbed five rebounds. Bourne netted nine points and
Joe Keedy pulled down nine boards.
Gettysburg (6-9, CC 4-4) was paced by Gordon and Kirkpatrick. Both players led four Bullet players in scoring with 14 points apiece. Gordon also dished out four assists, while Kirkpatrick had five rebounds.
Swarthmore (5-10, CC 2-6) visits archrival Haverford on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. with a point for the Hood Trophy on the line.
