Women’s Basketball Defeats Bryn Athyn, 69-53, for Third Straight Victory

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Elle Larsen and senior Katie Lytle each fell just shy of a double-double to help lead the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 69-53 win over Bryn Athyn on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Tarble Pavilion. The Garnet closed out non-conference play riding a three-game winning streak.

The beginning of the game was a seesaw battle with two ties and four lead changes. But a 3-pointer by senior Stephanie Lechich broke a 14-all tie and sparked a 9-0 Garnet run at the midway point of the half. Junior Chastity Hopkins had four points during the run.

After the Lions closed the gap to six on a Kristina Clark jumper, Swarthmore burst ahead by double figures when Larsen found Lytle for a bucket that made it 31-20 at the 2:42 mark. A Lechich trey gave the Garnet their largest lead at 14 points which they carried into the break.

Swarthmore maintained its double-digit lead for most of the second half and opened the scoring when Larsen hit a jumper to give the hosts a 38-22 advantage with 18:31 on the clock. Led by Clark, Bryn Athyn attempted to rally and came as close as eight at 47-39 when the freshman forward drove in for a layup.

Maggie O'Neil, however, put the Garnet ahead by twin figures for good by canning a shot from downtown to create a 50-39 score with 11:46 left. O'Neil gave the hosts their largest lead of the game at 18 in the waning minutes before they eventually running away with the 16-point triumph.

Larsen finished the game with 19 points and eight rebounds to go along with three blocked shots to pace Swarthmore, while Lytle contributed 16 points, nine boards and a team-leading four assists. Lechich and O'Neil contributed 12 points apiece, and Hopkins set two career highs with six points and five rebounds.

Clark led Bryn Athyn (4-6) with a game-high 22 points after shooting 8-for-15 from the field and 5-for-6 at the line. She also had four helpers and four rebounds.

Swarthmore (7-5) resumes Centennial Conference play when it hosts McDaniel on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.
