Box Score 4 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team (7-1) claimed the 15th Annual Guetle Volleyball Invitational hosted by Catholic University of America with an unblemished record over the two days, dropping just one set.
Three Garnet players earned awards for their efforts over the weekend as
Madison Heppe '16 was named most valuable player and
Chastity Hopkins '15 and
Danielle Sullivan '14 were named all-tournament.
Swarthmore will return to action September 14-15 as it hosts the Garnet Classic featurning Stevenson, Vassar and Hamilton.
Day 2 - Marymount (Va.) and Catholic University of America
Swarthmore gathered a 3-0 (25-17, 30-28, 25-18) victory over Marymount to open the second day, entering the championship match facing the only other undefeated team in the tournament, host Catholic. The Garnet needed four sets to finish the Cardinals, 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16).
Heppe, tournament MVP, anchored the Garnet defense against both Marymount and Catholic with 29 and 34 digs, respectively. At the net, Hopkins collected five block assists in the two matches and Lobichusky added two solo blocks and six block assists.
Four Garnet players hit double-digit kills in the four-set match with Catholic for the tournament title, including Duszyk (14), Hopkins (16), Lobichusky (10) and Sullivan with 14. Primary setter DuBois finalized her fourth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 14 digs against the Cardinals.
The Garnet collected 12 service aces on day two, including four from Sullivan against Catholic and two from Heppe against Marymount.
Day 1 - College of Mount St. Vincent and Eastern Mennonite University
Swarthmore showed its team strength in the opening day of the Guetle Volleyball Invitational by sweeping both opponents in three sets. The Garnet shutdown the CMSV first with set scores 25-11, 25-15, 25-5 followed by a three-set match with the Saints (25-15, 25-11, 25-20).
Junior
Kate Amodei grounded the Garnet defense with a combined 31 digs.
Madison Heppe '16 collected 12 digs in each match on the day.
The Garnet had a great day at the net with 13 total team blocks, 9.5 of which came against Eastern Mennonite. In that match, senior
Maggie Duszyk gathered six block assists, teaming with senior
Brone Lobichusky who had five block assists in the same match.
Chastity Hopkins '15 and
Danielle Sullivan '14 each had a solo block in the three-set defeat over the Royals.
Sophomore setter
Sam DuBois controlled the offense well with 38 assists against the Dophins and 31 against the Royals. She collected her third double-double on the season with the addition of 12 digs versus Eastern Mennonite.
Sullivan hit double-digit kills in both matches with 21 total. Lobichusky led the attack against Mount St. Vincent with 12 kills on 16 attempts and Hopkins found her groove in the second match with 12 kills.
Swarthmore is back in action on Sunday with matches against Marymount (Va.) and host Catholic.
