Box Score Swarthmore, Pa. - The Swarthmore field hockey team fell 4-1 to 320 rival Widener University on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Clothier Field. The Widener Pride weathered an early storm to overtake the Garnet in an attack led by sophomore Meghan Garvey, who netted the Pride's first two goals.
Senior defender
Anne Rosenblatt opened up her account for the season with a goal from the penalty stripe. Rosenblatt's first goal would catapult the Garnet to an early lead, one they would hold onto for 25 minutes.
In the waning seconds of the first half, Garvey dramatically equalized the score line to send the rivals into halftime knotted at one. Garvey decisively redirected a penalty corner pinged in by sophomore Ashley Aires for the final goal of the half.
Garvey wasted no time to find the back of the net again, scoring in the second minute of the new half. Garvey gave her side the lead, again capitalizing on a dangerous cross into the area that was sent in by senior Brittany Gunderson.
The Pride would go on to score two more unanswered goals. Junior Mackenzie Lindquist put her team up 3-1, unassisted in the 48th, and Garvey would return the favor to Gunderson, who netted her first of the afternoon, and her first of the season.
Garnet goalies
Gabby Capone, a senior, and sophomore
Ainsley Parrish combined for six saves on the afternoon. Their counterpart, junior Maggie Karmeris, recorded two saves for the Pride.
The Garnet will look rebound on the road against Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 4:00 p.m.
