Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior
Michael Superdock scored his third goal of the season as the #19 Swarthmore men's soccer team played Ursinus to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Patterson Field.
Swarthmore had a 9-5 advantage in total shots over the first 45 minutes, but it was Ursinus (4-4-1, CC 1-0-1) that was able to get on the board before the break. Aaron Nelson headed home a cross from Jesse Hart to give the hosts the lead shortly before recess.
The Garnet, who nearly scored in the opening minutes of the first half on a
Devon Baughen strike that was batted away by a Bear defender, attempted to tie the match early in the second half. Superdock hammered a header off a
Wyatt McCall corner kick in the 55th minute that got past goalkeeper Ryan Murphy, but a Bear defender came to the rescue again to keep the visitors off the board.
Swarthmore, however, kept firing a barrage of shots at Murphy and was finally able to break through in the 75th minute. After being robbed of a goal earlier in the frame, Superdock was able to head home the equalizer with assists coming from sophomore
Alec McClean and senior
Jake Weiner to eventually force overtime.
After attempting 12 of the 13 shots in the second half, the Garnet continued to dominate in the extra sessions. Swarthmore unleashed five shots at Murphy, including two off of corner kicks, but the Bear goalkeeper was able to stop everything that came his way to help the hosts salvage the draw.
Senior
Peter Maxted made two saves on seven opportunities for Swarthmore, while Ursinus' Murphy turned away eight of the 25 shots he faced.
Swarthmore (5-0-3, CC 1-0-1) will look to remain undefeated when it returns to Clothier Field to continue Centennial Conference play against Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
