Field Hockey Falls to Johns Hopkins in Conference Play; Gluck Nets Two Goals

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore Erin Gluck scored two goals, but the Swarthmore College field hockey team dropped a 6-2 decision to Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference action on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Clothier Field.

Johns Hopkins (5-3, CC 3-0) got back-to-back goals from Kiana Duncan in a span of 1:16 to take a 2-0 lead at the midway point of the first half. Maddie Fryer then added a goal to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

Fryer set up a tally by Lindsey Adams to make it 4-0 in the 43rd minute, but Swarthmore did not go down quietly and got on the board in the 52nd minute of a wild second half. Gluck began a flurry of four goals that would be exchanged between the teams in the final 20 minutes by potting a rebound off a Julia Thomas shot that was initially saved by Zoey Atabek.

After Fryer scored her second goal of the game to give the Blue Jays a 5-1 advantage, Gluck would net her second marker of the match by sliding the ball into the cage through a scrum of players from both teams. Miceile Barrett then added an insurance tally for the Blue Jays that closed out the scoring and produced the final outcome.

Senior Gabby Capone made nine saves on 23 chances in the losing effort for Swarthmore before being relieved by sophomore Ainsley Parrish, who turned away two of four she faced over the final nine minutes. Atabek of Hopkins stopped nine of the 15 shots she saw and picked up the win.

Swarthmore (2-7, CC 0-3) continues Centennial Conference play when it visits Washington College on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.
