Women’s Soccer Defeats Ursinus, 1-0, to Post First Centennial Conference Victory

Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Rebecca Mayeda scored her sixth goal of the season to help lift the Swarthmore College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Ursinus on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Patterson Field.

Swarthmore (5-2, CC 1-1) got the only goal it needed in just the 13th minute of play. Mayeda found the back of the net by beating goalkeeper Kara DiJoseph on a breakaway.

Mele Johnson almost doubled the lead for Swarthmore in the 69th minute, but her attempt was cleared away at the last moment by Kesley Shafer. Moving forward, the Garnet back line consisting of Justine Albers, Ellen Bachmannhuff, Emily Telford-Marx and Elyse Tierney would not allow the Bears to attempt a shot for the remainder of the match to help the team hold on for the win on the road.

Reba Magier of Swarthmore earned the shutout victory between the pipes by making five saves on nine chances. DiJoseph of Ursinus (4-4, CC 0-2) turned away four of the 14 shots she faced in the losing effort.

Swarthmore continues Centennial Conference play when it hosts Dickinson on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
