Early Goals Lift Field Hockey Over Immaculata, 2-0

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team (2-4) used two quick goals to move past Immaculata University (2-3) by a 2-0 score on Friday afternoon.

The goals were scored less than a minute apart at 8:36 and 9:15 into the first half - both of which came from off a penalty corner. Senior midfielder Aarti Rao netted her first of the season to open the scoring. She sent the input pass on a quick trip to the back of the cage. Freshman Katherine Ianni collected her first collegiate less than a minute later by deflecting Rao's shot into the goal.

Those would be the lone goals of the game as neither team strung together other fierce opportunties. Swarthmore looked for a third goal in the 55th minute from sophomore Eric Gluck, but her attempt was saved by defender Anna Gilbert.

The Garnet defense of senior Anne Rosenblatt, junior Alexis Zavez and sophomore Laura Hyder kept the Mighty Macs attack at bay with handfuls of blocked shots and forced pressure passes.

Senior keeper Gabby Capone had a quiet day between the pipes for Swarthmore, facing just one shot on target in her first shutout of the season. On the other end, Immaculata keepers Christine McIntyre and Sarah Pasternak split time evenly in the effort with McIntyre taking the loss after the two goals against in the first half.

Up next, the Garnet open Centennial Conference play at home against Franklin and Marshall on Wednesday, September 18 at 4:00 p.m.
