Field Hockey Opens Drew Fall Festival with 4-3 Overtime Victory

Nia Jones '13 tallied game winning goal in the 79th minute

Box Score MADISON, N.J. - Senior Nia Jones of the Swarthmore College (1-0) field hockey team tallied the game-winning goal during the 79th minute to give the Garnet a 4-3 overtime victory over Cabrini College (0-1) in the Drew Fall Festival.

The game-winner came at 78:09 as Jones moved from the midfield, beating defenders to score the unassisted seal of victory. She finished with two goals and one assist on the day, while sophomore Abigail Lauder netted two including the an early goal in the second half to tie the match at 3-3.

Senior goalkeeper Gabby Capone started between the pipes, making eight stops in 35:00. Sophmore Ainsley Parrish finished the game with a career-high 11 saves, including two big saves in the overtime frame.

The Cavaliers scored first off the opening play at 00:34 on a goal from Jen Webb. Swarthmore needed just a minute to regroup - Lauder redirected a long pass from senior Aarti Rao at 1:40 to notch the score at 1-1. Over the next seven minutes Cabrini fired off shot after shot - Capone made three stops - before finding an opening at 8:34 to take a 2-1 lead. Both teams would score once more before the break.

The victory was the tenth-consecutive season-opening win for the Garnet who return to the field at noon on Saturday to take on host Drew on the second day of the Drew Fall Festival.
