Men's Basketball Routs Haverford to Complete Season Sweep

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team (7-18, 6-12) ended the 2012-13 season on a high note, defeating arch-rival Haverford by a score of 76-60 on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Will Gates ended his illustrious Garnet career with a game-high 25 points. Gates finishes his career with a program-record 1,702 career points, becoming just the ninth player in Centennial Conference history to eclipse 1,700 career points. Junior Jay Kober finished with 17 points while sophomore Karl Barkley added 10 points. Junior Jordan Federer capped a strong finish to the season at the point-guard position with seven assists.

Swarthmore's win was noteworthy on many fronts. The victory gave the Garnet its first season sweep of the rival Fords since the 2005-06 season. The win was also Swarthmore's first at Haverford's Gooding Area and its largest margin of victory over the Fords since a 60-43 win on Jan. 18, 2006.

The Garnet completely out-classed its rivals from the opening tip. Swarthmore shot 49 percent from the field compared to just 38 percent for the Fords, nailed 14 more free throws and out-rebounded the Fords 44-31.

Swarthmore set the tone in the first half, shooting 57 percent from the field to build a 16-point halftime lead. Gates was nearly unstoppable in the first stanza, scoring 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The Garnet closed out the half on an excellent final play, as Federer let the clock run down under five seconds, dribbled past his defender into the paint and dished off to an open Sean Thaxter under the bucket. The freshman finished off the play at the buzzer, sending the Garnet into the break with a 43-27 lead.

The Fords made a small run mid-way through the second half, but got no closer than seven points away from the Garnet's lead. Up 55-48 with 7:04 to play, Swarthmore extended its lead back to double-digits on a three-pointer from Kober, who led the Garnet with 11 second-half points. The Fords would not get within single digits for the remainder of the game, as Swarthmore closed out the season-ending win.

Thaxter had a nice all-around game, finishing with seven points, five rebounds and three assists. Junior Joe Keedy, Gates and Barkley all recorded six rebounds.

Federer completed the season with 93 assists, good for the sixth-best single-season total in program history. Kober finishes the season with 966 career points.

Swarthmore concludes the 2012-13 season at 7-18, a four-game improvement from last season.
