Katie Lytle scored a game-high 18 points in leading the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 65-57 victory over Dickinson on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Kline Center. The Garnet earned their first Centennial Conference victory of the season by shooting a season-best 50 percent from the field.
Dickinson freshman Mary Martin netted the first seven points of the game to give the Red Devils an early advantage less than three minutes into the contest. Swarthmore, however, started to chip away at the deficit and took the lead when freshman
Maggie O'Neil canned a 3-pointer to make it 17-16 at the 11:44 mark. Senior
Stephanie Lechich hit a shot from downtown on the Garnet's next possession, as the visitors held on to the lead for the remainder of the frame.
Swarthmore, which held a 36-30 advantage at the break, stayed ahead throughout the second half and expanded its lead to double digits at 46-36 when senior Kayla Mortizky set up junior
Elle Larsen for a layup with 14:32 on the clock. The Garnet led by as many as 16 courtesy of another O'Neil trifecta and held off a late charge by the Devils to eventually earn the eight-point win.
Lytle scored her 18 points by most notably shooting 7-for-10 from the field to lead Swarthmore. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Larsen contributed 17 points and eight boards, while O'Neil finished with a career-high 11 points to go along with five rebounds and two blocks.
Dickinson (1-6, CC 0-5) was paced by Martin, who finished the game with 16 points and seven rebounds. Jennifer Smith added 12 points, six boards and four steals.
Swarthmore (4-4, CC 1-4) returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 11 when it visits Widener for a 320 Challenge matchup. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
