LANCASTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team will continue its season when it competes in the 2013 Centennial Conference Tournament this weekend at Haverford College's historic Walton Field. Live statistics and video will be available for fans who can't make it to Haverford.
The Garnet locked up the second seed after suffering a pair of 2-1 losses to close out the regular season and will face third-seeded Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in the first semifinal match. Haverford, which won a head-to-head tiebreaker over Swarthmore to claim the top seed, will face fourth-seeded Dickinson, which advanced with a 2-1 win over Johns Hopkins on Wednesday night, in the second semifinal at 1:30 p.m. The winners of Saturday's semifinal contests will play in the championship with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
Swarthmore will make its eighth Centennial Conference playoff appearance with a 9-4-4 ledger overall, including a 5-2-2 mark in league play, and have the opportunity to avenge a tough 2-1 loss to Franklin & Marshall from this past Saturday. Noah Sterngold tied the match to give the Diplomats, who are currently ranked 15th in the latest NSCAA National Poll, a one-goal victory when the teams recently met in Lancaster on Nov. 2. The Garnet are 1-2 against the remaining teams in the tournament field and will be attempting to capture their third Centennial title overall and first since 2010.
Notes: All four teams in this weekend's tournament field have been nationally ranked by the NSCAA at some point this season ... Franklin & Marshall is currently 15th in the latest poll released on Nov. 5 ... Swarthmore and Haverford have been ranked as high as 14th this season, while Dickinson was tabbed 11th back on Sept. 22 ... All four teams remaining have held the highest national ranking in the conference for at least one week this fall.
