Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Katie Lytle registered a double-double to lead the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a convincing 59-42 win over Kean in the season opener for both schools on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Tarble Pavilion. With the victory, the Garnet will play in tomorrow's championship game of the 13th Annual Tip-Off Tournament.
After Kean (0-1) opened the scoring by getting a free throw from senior Simone Smith and a layup from junior Shay Collins, Swarthmore came back with seven unanswered points and never looked back. Lytle extended the lead to double figures for the first time at 31-21 after converting a layup with 41 seconds left to give the Garnet a 10-point cushion to work with at the break.
Swarthmore ballooned its lead up to 23 points by holding the Cougars to just one field goal for over nine minutes to start the second half. A Smith layup at the 11:26 mark created a 48-27 score and put an end to a 14-0 Garnet run that was capped by a 3-point field goal from sophomore
Jessica Jowdy. The Garnet never let the visitors come closer than 14 the rest of the way.
Lytle ended the afternoon with 982 career points following a 15-point, 19-rebound outburst to pace Swarthmore. Junior
Elle Larsen added 13 points, while senior
Kayla Moritzky finished with a game-high eight assists and six rebounds. Sophomore
Abbey Deckard provided a spark off the bench with six points, five rebounds and four steals.
Kean was paced by Jazmine Davis' nine points and game-leading 22 rebounds in a reserve role. Smith fell just shy of a double-double with 12 points and eight boards.
Swarthmore (1-0) will face Connecticut College, which defeated Cabrini later in the afternoon, in the championship game of the Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m.
