HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team fell to Centennial Conference opponent Haverford College in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-17) in the opening game of the tri-match on Saturday. Swarthmore fought to five sets to defeat Messiah College 3-2 (19-25, 28-26, 25-21, 24-26, 15-7) in the second match.
With the split, Swarthmore improves to 14-11 overall and fall to 2-6 in conference. Haverford improved to 18-7 and 4-4 in the conference, while Messiah falls to 16-10.
Against the Fords, sophomore Madison Heppe earned 14 digs for the Garnet defense, while senior Danielle Sullivan collected 11 in the effort. Sam DuBois '16 and Brone Lobichusky '14 each had a solo block.
On attack, sophomore Anastasia White-Torruellas swung eight kills and Lobichusky had six. DuBois picked up her 19th double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs.
For Haverford, Keri Godbe and Meg O'Day led the attack with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Four Fords had double-digit digs and the team combined for nine service aces.
Haverford picks up the first Hood Trophy point of the 2013-14 year with the defeat over Garnet volleyball.
Match 2
In the match against Messiah, three Garnet players earned double-doubles - Sullivan (15 kills, 36 digs), DuBois (45 assists, 17 digs) and Lobichusky (10 kills, 11 digs). Sullivan's 36 digs is a single-match career-high for the senior outside hitter whom reached the 1,000-dig plateau earlier this season.
Sullivan, Heppe and Messiah's Kirsten Douglas join the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) 30-dig club for their defensive efforts in the match. Heppe had 32 digs and Douglas earned 31 digs in the five-setter.
On the front line, Lobichusky had one solo block and five assists and had three service aces. White-Torruellas had nine kills, nine digs and two block assists in the match.Â
Swarthmore returns to action on Wednesday, October 30 traveling to Ursinus for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
