Late Battle Falls Short at Washington College; Allen & Jones Tally

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Swarthmore College field hockey (2-8, 0-4 CC) team battled back in the second half, but its effort fell short to homestanding Washington College (3-5, 2-1 CC) by a 3-2 score on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. 

The Shorewomen opened the scoring on their first shot of the game - just under five minutes into the frame - as junior Jackie O'Connell tallied her first of three goals in the game for the home team. Swarthmore found a solid scoring opportunity as freshman Ursula Monaghan took a penalty stroke with 6:33 to play in the half, but her shot was saved.

Despite the 1-0 score deficit, the Garnet held a 13-9 shot advantage in the opening 35 minutes.

Sophmore Audrey Allen, notched her first goal of the season, found the equalizer for the Garnet with just under 29 minutes to play in the second half. She collected a loose ball in front and converted. Over the next nine minutes and change the Shorewomen dominated the field and sent in nine shots - four were blocked and two saved by sophomore keeper Ainsley Parrish. The tenth shot proved to be golden for Washington with O'Connell finding the back of the cage again with 18:38. She tallied again in the 56th minute for a Washington 3-1 lead.  On just the second shot of the half for the Garnet, senior Nia Jones put Swarthmore within one goal just 21 seconds later as she drove to cage for her sixth goal on the season.

Parrish finished with a career-best 14 saves between the pipes - including 10 in the second half - in a complete game. Steph Harryman finished with seven saves in the contest. 

Swarthmore continues its road schedule with a visit to the battlefield on Saturday, October 5 to face conference opponent Gettysburg College at 1:00 p.m.
