Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to McDaniel; Sullivan and DuBois Post Double-Doubles

Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior Danielle Sullivan and sophomore Sam DuBois each posted a double-double, but the Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to McDaniel on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Gill Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-23 and 25-19.

The beginning of the first set featured three ties and two lead changes before the Green Terror broke loose. After Sullivan recorded a kill that was set up by DuBois to bring the Garnet within one, the Green Terror rattled off four straight points. Colette Kellen set up Kloe Martin and Caroline Savin for two kills apiece to give the hosts a 10-5 cushion that they would not give up the rest of the way.

Swarthmore (11-8, CC 1-4) put forth its best effort in the second set. The Garnet rattled off five straight points, beginning with a Sullivan kill that was once again set up by DuBois before DuBois capped the stretch with a kill herself that forced the Green Terror to burn a timeout with the visitors leading by a 9-4 score.

The Garnet continued to cling to the lead for most of the set until Martin broke the sixth tie with a kill that gave the Green Terror a 21-20 edge, setting up a photo finish. After brought the Garnet to within one on a kill, Martin, however, finished a pass from Kellen to give McDaniel a 25-23 set victory. The hosts then carried that momentum into the third set and never trailed to pull out the conference win.

Swarthmore was paced by Sullivan and DuBois in the losing effort. Sullivan registered 12 kills and 12 digs to go along with two blocks, and DuBois notched 29 assists and 11 digs. Seniors Brone Lobichusky and Maggie Duszyk ended the match with six kills apiece.

McDaniel (14-5, CC 4-2) was led by a pair of double-double performances by Martin and Kellen. Martin finished with 20 kills and 26 digs, while Kellen posted 28 assists and 15 digs.

Swarthmore (11-8, CC 1-4) continues Centennial Conference play when it visits Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
