Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Decision to McDaniel in Centennial Conference Play

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Erin Gluck starting the scoring to put the Swarthmore field hockey team (2-11, CC 0-6) up early, but the Garnet couldn't hold off a relentless McDaniel squad (7-5, CC 2-3) that surged in the second half to win by a 3-1 score Saturday, Oct. 12 at Clothier Stadium.

Gluck and the Garnet wasted no time to seize an early lead, scoring a decisive goal in the seventh minute of play. Senior Nia Jones fired a shot that was blocked by a McDaniel defender, but Gluck took the loose ball and tucked it inside the right post to grab a 1-0 lead.

The Garnet would build early defensive momentum as well, holding the Green Terror scoreless in the first period. Senior Garnet goalkeeper Gabby Capone spearheaded this effort with seven first half saves.

The second half was all McDaniel, which scored three second-half goals to catapult themselves to the 3-1 Centennial conference victory. In the 51st minute, sophomore Sara Reynolds scored, firing a shot from outside the arc that was inauspiciously redirected into the goal by a Garnet defender to tie the game at 1.

The Green terror next went up 2-1 with an unassisted goal from senior Sarah Meszler, who beat Capone to right in the 58th minute. The final goal came in the waning minutes of regulation when senior Julia Little took a pass from the top of the arc and finished soundly off a pass from freshman Suzannah Banister.

The Garnet will look to rebound in conference play at home against Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Play is slated for 4 P.M.
