Box Score
LANCASTER, Pa. - A dominant 37-point performance from Hayk Gyokchyan carried No. 17 Franklin & Marshall (11-1, 6-0) past the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (3-10, 2-4) by a score of 81-58 on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
Senior Will Gates was the Garnet's high scorer for the third time in four games, as he finished with 23 points to go along with a team-best five rebounds. Junior Joe Keedy added 10 points while junior Jordan Federer netted nine in defeat.
Just two days removed from a career-best 40-point performance, Gyokchyan was unstoppable once again, as the Diplomats' big man hit 15-of-23 shots and seven-of-eight free throws. Morgan Lee (13 points) and Ed Early (10 points) both finished in double-figures coming off the bench for the Dips, who finished the game shooting 53 percent from the field.
The Garnet jumped out to an early advantage. Four different players found the basket in the opening five minutes as Swarthmore jumped out to a 13-9 lead. The Garnet's lead would be short-lived, however, as the Dips responded with a 15-2 run over the ensuing eight minutes to take complete control of the game. Gyokchyan recorded 10 of the 15 points during that span, as the Diplomats held a 26-15 lead with 7:44 remaining in the half.
Swarthmore battled back to finish off the first half - thanks in part to several big baskets from Gates, who scored 13 first-half points - but Franklin & Marshall closed the half on a 12-4 run to take a 13-point lead (38-25) into the break.
In the second half, the Dips maintained a double-digit advantage throughout. Gyokchyan added 14 points to his total while starting guard Matt Porter added seven points in the second stanza to lead F&M to an 81-58 win.
Along with a strong shooting performance, the Dips won the game with their defense, forcing 19 Garnet turnovers.
Neither team shot well from behind the arc, with the Garnet hitting just 3-of-16 attempts and the Dips just 2-of-11.
