Women's Basketball Collects 63-46 Victory Over Eastern Connecticut in Naismith Classic Consolation

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Backed by three double-digit performances, the Swarthmore College women's basketball team found its way back in the win column with a 63-46 victory over Eastern Connecticut in the Naismith Classic consolation game on Wednesday afternoon.

With the victory, the Garnet improves to 8-1 on the season, while the Warriors drop to 2-9 after the two-day tournament.

Katie Lytle led the Garnet offense with 17 points and eight rebounds. Elle Larsen notched 15 points and six rebounds, while Madeline Ross collected 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Garnet went on a 7-0 run in just under 30 seconds to pull ahead 16-4 at the 13:00 minute mark of the first half. During that run, Lytle nailed a jumper and drew the foul for the three-point conversion. Moments later, freshman Jessica Jowdy hit a jumper to give Swarthmore the 12-point lead. Eastern Connecticut came within nine points, 28-19, at the 4:08 mark with a free throw from Kristina Forsman, but couldn't shrink the margin any further.

Shooting 50 percent from the field and 88.9 percent on the line, Swarthmore racked up a 39-23 lead going into the break.

The second frame mirrored the first as Swarthmore extended its lead to as much as 23 points. Lytle, hitting 5-of-8 from the field, picked up 12 of her 17 points in the final 20 minutes of play to secure a Garnet victory.

Swarthmore will return to Centennial Conference play Saturday, January 5th as the Garnet travel to Franklin & Marshall for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
