Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Ignited by an early goal from Michael Stewart, his sixth on the season, the Swarthmore College men's soccer team collected its third shutout of 2012 with a 2-0 victory over McDaniel College on Saturday night at Clothier Field in Centennial Conference action.
In the opening five minutes of play, Swarthmore (7-1-1, 3-1-0 CC) had two scoring opportunities to set the momentum of the match, but McDaniel (4-6-0, 1-3-0 CC) did not falter until the eighth minute of play when the Garnet finally put one past the goalkeeper.
Stewart took a pass from Noah Sterngold at 7:41 to put Swarthmore on board first. The Garnet collected 13 shots in the first half, including another opportunity for Stewart off a free-kick attempt, but the Green Terror goalkeeper Zach Nibbelink was there for a solid save.
The second half started out much like the first with Swarthmore hard on the attack. Jack Momeyer had the perfect opportunity coming up the left side, but the shot came off just shy of the frame. Momeyer collected seven shots for the Garnet.
McDaniel cranked up the intensity in the second half, registering six shots, but was unable to find the right combination to sink one past Swarthmore goalkeeper Peter Maxted. In the 70th minute, Maxted held off a point-blank shot for his biggest save on the night to hold the Green Terror scoreless.
Just shy of 10 minutes remaining in the game, John Pontillo found the ball out in front off a pass from Sterngold to give the Garnet a 2-0 lead and ensuing victory.
Maxted collected four saves between the pipes, while Nibbelink registered five saves in the effort for the Green Terror.
McDaniel held a 6-5 corner kick edge, while Swarthmore managed a 22-10 shot advantage in the match.
Swarthmore will be back in action on Saturday, October 6th as it travels to Gettysburg for a matinee with the Bullets beginning at 1:00 p.m.
