Volleyball Win Streak Clipped by the Diplomats, 3-1

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped its first Centennial Conference match Wednesday night to Franklin & Marshall, 3-1, to end a nine-game winning streak. Despite winning the first set 26-24, the Garnet lost the next three sets 25-23, 25-15, and 25-16.

Swarthmore (10-2, 2-1 CC) was unable to extend its straight-set victories past 28 against Franklin and Marshall (8-10, 2-0) which gathered 46 kills in the game.

Senior Kat Montemurro registered her sixth double-double on the season with 12 kills and 20 digs for the Garnet. Also on defense, Kate Amodei gathered 12 digs, while Samantha DuBois added 10 digs. On the front line, Chastity Hopkins made one solo block along with two block assists.

Aiding the offense for Swarthmore were Zahra Ahmed and Danielle Sullivan with six and five digs, respectively. Allie Coleman racked up 30 assists, four kills for a .364 hitting percentage and had two service aces. Montemurro also had two of seven service aces for the Garnet.

Both teams committed its share of errors as the Diplomats made 18 errors on the attack out of 128 attempts, while Swarthmore faltered 17 out of 149 times. Oddly enough, both teams ended the night with 63 digs. F&M was strong on the front line, racking up four solo blocks and 12 block assists.

Swarthmore will continue CC play this Saturday as it travels to Johns Hopkins for an 11:00 a.m. match.
