Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Behind a 28-shot and 20-corner offensive barrage, the Swarthmore College field hockey team (6-2, 1-2) dominated the Dickinson Red Devils on Saturday to the tune of a convincing 6-1 victory from Clothier Field.
Five Garnet players found the back of the net, including junior Nia Jones, who scored a pair, and senior Katie Teleky, who scored for the eighth time in eight games.
After controlling the opening minutes, the Garnet lit the scoreboard midway through the first half. Having scooped a crafty attempt just wide minutes earlier, senior Sophia Agathis again found herself on the doorstep and, off a feed from freshman Erin Gluck, lifted back across the net over a diving keeper Katy Schlechtweg.
Just 87 seconds later, the lead was doubled. Off a corner, senior Julia Tallarico unleashed a worm-burning shot that was tipped home by Teleky. Teleky is third in the Conference with eight goals and 19 points.
Before the intermission, Jones added to the lead when junior Aarti Rao sprung her classmate into the circle and Jones pulled right around a diving Schlechtweg and finished into the open cage.
The Garnet, who entered the week 13th in Division III with 13.5 corners per game, earned 13 in the first half while taking 19 shots.
Dickinson pulled one back five minutes into second half when three Red Devils found themselves unmarked in the circle, but it took the quick-strike by Garnet all of 19 seconds later to answer back. Jones again came in on a breakaway after a searching ball from Anne Rosenblatt hopped off a defender's stick and the three-goal lead was restored.
Rosenblatt, on a rebound and feed from Rao, and senior Catie Meador, on a penalty stroke, capped the scoring as the Garnet earned its first Centennial win of the year.
Junior Gabby Capone earned the victory in goal playing the first 60 minutes before freshman Ainsley Parrish finished the contest, making her first collegiate save.
Swarthmore remains home on Tuesday to host the Eastern Eagles at 4:00 in a rematch of a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory last season.
