Volleyball Routs FDU-Florham and Stevens to Claim Ducks Classic Championship

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Swarthmore College (8-1) volleyball team added two more victories to the win column on Sunday at the Stevens Ducks Classic with wins over Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham (0-5) and Stevens University (2-9). The Garnet finished both teams in straight sets to become tournament champions as it did not lose one set the entire weekend.

Swarthmore held FDU-Florham to just 43 points with set wins of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-19, while also defeating the host, Stevens by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-18 to close out a perfect weekend.

Against the Devils, freshman libero Madison Heppe, named the tournament Most Valuable Player, led the Garnet defense with 15 digs. Danielle Sullivan and Kat Montemurro added 14 and 12 digs, respectively. Montemurro was named to the All-Tournament team with her efforts the entire four-match weekend. 

On the front line, Chastity Hopkins and Danielle Delpeche each had one solo block and one block assist. Samantha DuBois and Ahmed added a block assist each as well.

Aiding the offense against the Devils, DuBois collected 38 assists, while Ahmed led the attack with 12 kills. Sullivan and Delpeche each had seven kills in the three-set sweep. Hopkins was an offensive threat for the Garnet with her eight kills on a .467 hitting percentage in the match.

The Garnet finished out the weekend with a close match against the Ducks, but came away victorious in straight sets. Heppe stood in the way of Stevens' offense with 25 digs in the match. Sullivan collected 13 digs for the Garnet defense and added seven kills for the offense.

Swarthmore was led offensively by Montemurro, who collected 13 kills on a .319 hitting percentage. Hopkins added eight kills, while Brone Lobichusky and Ahmed each registered six kills.

The Garnet will return to action on Wednesday, September 19th as Centennial Conference play begins. Swarthmore goes on the road to meet Ursinus College for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
