Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team (5-1, 0-1 CC) suffered its first loss of the season, falling 7-0 to No. 9 Franklin and Marshall (4-1, 1-0 CC). In their first conference game the Garnet were hounded by Diplomat senior Kristen Zublin, who scored three goals.
The Garnet began the game with a strong defensive effort, stopping the first six shots, including Zublin's first two, but Zublin was able to put the Diplomats on the board in the 17th minute. She didn't wait long to score her second to give Franklin and Marshall a 2-0 lead. The Garnet defense held strong for the rest of the half, not allowing a shot for the final 12 minutes.
The Diplomats added a flurry of goals early in the second half, including one in the 40th minute by senior Steph Mcdonald and Zublin's third goal in the 43rd minute. Three different additional scorers would add to the Diplomats lead en route to a 7-0 victory to open conference play.
The Garnet offense was stifled by the stingy Diplomat defense, only managing one shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Gabby Capone registered eight saves for the Garnet.
Swarthmore will look to bounce back Tuesday, September 19th at Ursinus College. The game is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
