Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – No. 6 Swarthmore College (9-9) field hockey team ended its 2012 campaign to No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology (13-9), 5-2, on Wednesday in the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic field hockey quarterfinals on a rainy, snowy afternoon at Clothier Field. The Ducks advance to the semifinals taking place this weekend at a site to be determined.
The Garnet took no time getting the first tally on board as Aarti Rao notched her first goal of the season in the third minute of play to give Swarthmore the early advantage.
Converting off a penalty corner, the Ducks found the equalizer at 12:25 from Megan Traub with her tenth goal on the year. Marguerite Chavez passed the ball off the input for the assist.
The Ducks scored twice more in the first stanza with goals from Dailyn Brook and Mary Nikish to take a 3-1 advantage into halftime.
Traub added her second goal of the game in the 41st minute, again off the penalty corner, with the input from Chavez for her third assist in the game giving the Ducks a 5-1 advantage
Swarthmore looked to shrink the deficit late in the second half, adding a goal from Sophia Agathis at 57:16. Agathis shot a blaze just inside the circle for her fifth goal on the season. The momentum came too late for the Garnet, as the Ducks closed out the ECAC quarterfinals with a 5-2 victory.
Gabby Capone played in all 70 minutes for the Garnet, registering two saves in the effort. Kaitlyn McClymont made five saves for the Ducks in her 62 minutes between the pipes, while Felicia Heard finished in goal.
Swarthmore held advantages in both shots (14) and penalty corners (13), but were not able to capitalize.
After its best start since 1997 (5-0), the Garnet finish the 2012 campaign at 9-9 overall.
