Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Swarthmore College (4-0, 2-0) women's basketball team continued its winning streak in historic fashion with a 66-56 victory over Muhlenberg (2-2, 1-1) Thursday night. With the victory, the Garnet snaps a 12-game losing skid against the Mules to capture its first victory over Muhlenberg since 2005 and just the second at Memorial Gym. The Garnet reaches the 4-0 mark for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
As the game's highest scorer, Katie Lytle put together a 20-point performance for the Garnet, going 9-for-10 at the charity stripe. Senior guard Madeline Ross registered 17 points, while Eliza Polli hit 4-for-5 from the three-point line in a 12-point performance. In transition, Swarthmore caught 12 steals on the night; Lytle grabbed five, while junior guard Katie Moritzky fought for four of her own.
Three Garnet players grabbed seven rebounds each – Elle Larsen, Moritzky, Ross – which was the most any player on the court collected.
The Garnet started off with a spark – capitalizing on a 13-0 run in the opening minutes to hold the Mules scoreless until 13:45 in the first half – and never looked back, maintaining the lead throughout all 40 minutes. Larsen and Ross aided four points each in the opening run, while Polli collected all four of her three-pointers in the first-half surge.
With a 19-point advantage at halftime, the Garnet had clear momentum and control of the game. Swarthmore capitalized on 18 of 36 shots, hitting 50 percent from the field – banking 40 percent in the game.
The second half had its downs for the Garnet, hitting just 21.1 percent with a total of four shots making the mark. However, Swarthmore prevailed at the free throw line down the final stretch to secure the victory, despite being outscored 32-23 in the final second stanza. The Mules came within eight points with a minute and a half remaining, but couldn't find the final push.
Alita Zabrecky led the Mules with 13 points and seven rebounds in 37 minutes of playing time.
The victory is just the eighth for the Garnet in the all-time series history with the Mules. Since the last win in 2005, the closest game was by 13 points.
Swarthmore will return to action on Monday, December 3rd in the next installment of the 320 Challenge with Widener. The first tip is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Tarble Pavilion.
