Women's Basketball Nets Third Straight; Defeats Dickinson 70-63 in Conference Opener

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team opened Centennial Conference play Tuesday night with a 70-63 victory over Dickinson College.

With 2:44 remaining, senior guard Madeline Ross collected the layup and foul to put the Garnet up by eight, 60-53, forcing a Dickinson (3-1, 0-1) timeout. Ross hit the foul shot for the three-point conversion and the decisive go-ahead and momentum to seal the third straight win for Swarthmore (3-0, 1-0). Ross led Garnet scorers with 20 points, while managing three steals and seven rebounds.

Sophomore forward Elle Larsen, scoring eight of the Garnet's opening 10 points, concluded the night with 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks. She closed the first half with ten points and three rebounds in 15 minutes of playing time.

The score remained close throughout the entire night – the largest lead came only during the final minutes of play, at eight points. The Red Devils secured the lead for the majority of the game, but a plunge is shooting efficiency and increase on turnovers in the second half gave the Garnet a window to prevail.

The Red Devils opened the final 20 minutes with a 4-0 run, 37-31, however Swarthmore responded with two jumpers from Katie Lytle and two successful free throws from Elizabeth Casey; the Garnet went 13-for-18 at the line for 72.2 percent. The teams managed to keep the score tight again for the second half.

Despite an uneven shooting percentage, the Red Devils managed just a two point lead going into the half, 33-31. Swarthmore's offense proved efficient on 36.8 percent, while Dickinson harnessed a 55.6 percent shooting percentage in the first half, hitting 15-for-27.

Bridget Borgese, reigning Centennial player of the week, led the Red Devils with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Belma Mekic collected the lone double-double in the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Swarthmore, now heading into Thanksgiving break, will return to action Thursday, November 29th when it travels to Muhlenberg. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
