Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College (12-4) volleyball team split with Gettysburg College and Moravian College on Saturday in a tri-match held at the Tarble Pavilion. The Garnet finished strong against Gettysburg (11-10) to complete a 3-2 victory for a Centennial Conference win. Later in the evening the Greyhounds of Moravian (17-4) proved to be too much for the Garnet, defeating it 3-1; Moravian finished the day with a win over Gettysburg as well.
Match 1
Decided by a thrilling fifth set, the Swarthmore College volleyball team collected a 3-2 victory over Gettysburg College during Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (3-2 CC) took the first and third sets 25-21, 25-22, while Swarthmore (4-2 CC) captured the second and fourth sets 25-13, 25-12 to force the fifth set. The Garnet took the decisive fifth set 20-18 with a service ace from freshman Samantha DuBois.
Madison Heppe led the Garnet defense with 35 digs, while Danielle Sullivan collected 30 digs over the five sets. The Garnet totaled five blocks as Zahra Ahmed led with four block assists and Brone Lobichusky had three of her own.
Kat Montemurro came out swinging with 25 kills and 19 digs en route to her eigth double-double of the season. Lobichusky added 10 kills and one service ace and Ahmed collected 11 kills in the match. Allie Coleman and Samantha DuBois each had 29 assists as the Garnet totaled 64. Coleman added six service aces for the Garnet.
Match 2
Extra points were necessary in two of the four sets as the Greyhounds and Garnet played in a close-point match. Moravian prevailed in the end, taking a 3-1 victory with set scores of 28-26, 23-25, 29-27, 25-23.
Montemurro led the Garnet defensive with 21 digs, while Chastity Hopkins and Lobichusky each had four block assists. Ahmed and Hopkins collected one solo block each. Sullivan collected a double-double of 10 kills and 16 digs.
Once again, the setting-duo of Coleman and DuBois each had 19 assists in the match. Montemurro and Coleman also matched in the box score with eight kills each.
Swarthmore will return to action on Thursday, October 11 in the Tarble Pavilion as Route 320 foe Widener comes to the Tarble Pavilion for a 7:00 p.m. match-up.
