Women's Soccer Clinches Playoff Spot With 3-0 Win Over Bryn Mawr

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team (11-5, 6-3) secured a spot in the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs thanks to a 3-0 shutout victory over rival Bryn Mawr on Wednesday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

Freshman Melissa Trofa scored a pair of first-half goals -- both of which were assisted by sophomore Emma Sindelar - to lead the Garnet offense. Sophomore Rehana Omardeen added a late tally to round out the scoring.

The Garnet defense completely shut down the Owls (4-9-3, 1-7-2), conceding just two shots and only one on goal for the evening. In goal for the Garnet, freshman Reba Magier, junior Katie Sipiora and senior Beth Martin all combined for the team shutout.

The Garnet's two first-half goals were nearly identical, with Sindelar racing past Owl defenders and crossing the ball into the box to find an open Trofa. The lone difference was that Sindelar's pass came from the left wing in the 27th-minute goal and from the right wing in the 37-th minute score.

Ahead 2-0 in the second half, Swarthmore continued to cruise, firing off 13 more shots and limiting the Owls to just one. Omardeen put a cap on the Garnet scoring in the 89th minute, as she fired over the top of the Bryn Mawr 'keeper to bring the match to the 3-0 final.

The Centennial playoff appearance is the sixth in program history.

Swarthmore's seed for the upcoming playoffs is still up in the air. The Garnet can place anywhere from the No. 3 to No. 5 seed depending on the outcome of its Saturday match against Haveford, as well as Muhlenberg's match against Ursinus.

The Swarthmore and Bryn Mawr soccer teams joined forces to promote Breast Cancer Awareness by hosting a "Think Pink" game. Both teams wore pink t-shirts in place of warm-up jerseys, and breast cancer survivors and victims names were read at half time.

Swarthmore closes out the regular season on Saturday when its hosts Haverford for Senior Day and Garnet Weekend. Play is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
