2012-13 Women's Swimming Season Preview

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - In 2011-12, the Swarthmore women's swim team was led by an outstanding group of underclassmen to a fourth-place finish and 10 event golds at the Centennial Conference championship meet. This year, the Garnet classes of 2014 and 2015 will look to lead the way once again as Swarthmore attempts to continue moving up the Conference ranks.

Under the guidance of head coach Sue Davis, the Garnet hopes to see repeats of last year's record-breaking performances. Supriya Davis '15 established herself in her rookie season as one of the premier talents in Division III swimming, winning Most Outstanding Performer honors at last year's championships while winning six gold medals and setting or participating in no fewer than seven college records (four relay, three individual) over the course of the season. She also broke the Centennial Conference record in the 100 butterfly and was selected to compete in the Division III National Championships in both butterfly distances.

Classmate Kate Wiseman '15 also made her mark on Garnet history, taking home five gold medals and a silver at championships, including a sweep of the sprint freestyle events, and setting six program records (four relay, two individual) in her freshman year.

The 2014 core of Margaret Regan, Rebecca Teng, and Erin Lowe continued to impact the Garnet in a significant way in their sophomore seasons. Regan, who was Swarthmore's lone gold medalist at the 2011 championships in her freshman year, took home four golds in 2012, including a repeat victory in the 400 IM and program records in both individual events. Teng and Lowe both contributed to the Garnet's three gold-medal winning relays, while Lowe additionally collected a pair of silvers in the butterfly events.

In addition to returning all medalists from last year's championships, Swarthmore boasts a group of six seniors who will provide a veteran presence on a young team. Hannah Gotwals, Jeewon Kim, Emily MacDuffie, Katie Schultz, Chloe Stevens, and Alice Wong comprise the Garnet class of 2013.

Six first-years will join the roster in this year's iteration of the Garnet squad, hoping to fill the shoes of the five who graduated at the end of last season.

Swarthmore begins the season with a three-meet homestand, starting with an October 31 "320 Challenge" engagement with local rival Widener at 6:30 p.m. The Garnet opens the Centennial dual meet schedule on November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at home against McDaniel. The fourth annual Swarthmore Invitational is scheduled for November 30 and December 1.
