Volleyball Clinches Playoff Spot With 3-1 Win Over Muhlenberg; Montemurro Records 1,000th Career Kill

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Senior Kat Montemurro became the fourth player in program history to record 1,000 career kills, leading the Swarthmore College volleyball team  to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-11) road victory over Muhlenberg on Wednesday evening.

With the victory, the Garnet (15-4, 6-2) clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

Finishing the match with 14 kills and 10 digs for her 11th double-double on the season, Montemurro's 1,000th career kill came on set point in the decisive third set, putting the Garnet ahead for good. She's the first Garnet player to reach 1,000 career kills since former teammate Genny Pezzola '12 hit the milestone in 2010.

Reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week Allie Coleman finished with 33 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Kate Amodei finished with a season-best and team-high 17 digs while junior Danielle Sullivan finished with eight kills and 13 digs. 

For the second-consecutive conference match, the Garnet dropped the first set before rallying for a commanding victory.

Swarthmore picked up its play significantly in the second set, hitting .318 as a team to level the scoreline (25-17). The Garnet continued its strong play throughout the third set, hitting .400 with 13 kills - including four consecutive from Montemurro to close out the set - to earn a 25-18 set win.

It was all Swarthmore in the fourth and final set, as the Garnet cruised to the 25-11 win.

Junior Brone Lobichusky had a strong all-around match, finishing with four service aces, five kills, three digs and three blocks. Sophomore Chastity Hopkins added seven kills.

The Mules were led by Chelsea Kaser with 21 digs, while Joanne Josephson and Erin Murphy combined for seven block assists. On attack, Sarah Weyhmuller and Holly Hynson clipped 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Nikki Dickson earned 31 assists, six digs, six kills and one service ace in the effort.

The volleyball team is off to Massachusetts for the remainder of fall break, participating in the Hall of Fame Tournament. The Garnet open the weekend with Smith on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
