Michele Fowler-Stewart was the very first goalie for the upstart varsity women’s soccer team and also graduated as the leading scorer for the women’s basketball team. She also played for two seasons on the softball team.
Fowler, a captain in both soccer and basketball for multiple seasons, made an impact on both the pitch and the court. Fowler is credited with two of the most prolific years in goal in program history with 166 saves in 1984 and 168 in 1985, both in the program’s top five. Fowler once saved 26 shots in a match against Franklin and Marshall in 1983.
On the basketball court, Fowler helped the Garnet to a winning record in her four-year career. She played before the advent of the 3-point line in women’s college basketball and still scored 1,738 points, a school record that stood until 2002. Fowler still holds the record for most field goals made in a career with 755, is fifth all-time in career steals with 209 and is 10th all-time in free throws made with 228.
Fowler helped the women’s basketball team upset Division II Allentown 59-56 to end the 1984-85 season and also helped the team win the PAIAW regular season title in 1985-86. Fowler was recognized with Seven Sisters All-Tournament honors each season, PAIAW All-Star status three times, was named to the All-Philadelphia Area Team as a sophomore and the MAC South All-Star Team as junior and named to the All-America Third Team as a senior by the American Women’s Sports Federation.
