Garnet Softball Rebounds to Split With Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Senior Sam Bennett knocked home what proved to be the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Swarthmore College softball team (18-14, 3-9) a 4-3 victory in the second game of its doubleheader with second-place Washington College (21-12, 9-5) on Tuesday afternoon. Swarthmore almost earned the sweep but the homestanding Shorewomen won the first game 4-3 on a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Softball Goes Down to the Wire to Split With Franklin & Marshall
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team (14-10, 2-6) and visiting Franklin & Marshall (9-15, 3-5) played in a pair of games that went right down to the final at-bats, with each team winning one half of the Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field. LANCASTER, Pa. - The Centennial Conference has named 57 Swarthmore College student-athletes to its 2012 Spring Academic Honor Roll, as announced on Tuesday. The honor roll recognizes athletes' performance both on the field and in the classroom. Softball Sweeps Rival Fords in Thrillers
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Behind strong pitching from sophomores Sarina Lowe and Melissa O’Connor and timely hitting from the Swarthmore offense, the Garnet softball team swept away the Haverford Fords in a pair of barn-burners on Saturday. The victories were Swarthmore’s first two in Centennial Conference play in 2012 as the team improved to 18-18 on the season. Swarthmore won Game 1 5-4 in nine innings after the Fords rallied to tie in the seventh and Game 2 7-4.

SWARTHMORE, PA – Behind the dominant pitching of Chelsea Homa, who struck out 22 batters while starting both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, the visiting Dickinson Red Devils swept a pair from the Swarthmore softball team on senior day at Clothier Field. Swarthmore, Pa. – Despite holding a lead in the fifth inning or later in both games of a Thursday doubleheader with Franklin & Marshall, the Swarthmore softball team found itself on the short end of a pair of one-run decisions 5-4 and 6-5. The Swarthmore pitching staff matched the Diplomats’ staff batter for batter and the Garnet out-hit Franklin & Marshall in game two but seven Swarthmore errors between the two games led to five unearned runs and left the Garnet lamenting missed opportunities.

SWARTHMORE, PA – Entering the week, the Swarthmore softball team was in the top half of the Centennial Conference in every significant offensive category except home runs. In the final non-conference tune-up before the start of Centennial Conference play, the Swarthmore softball team visited the Rutgers-Newark for a double-header. Saturday also saw the convergence of coaching lines as Swarthmore head coach Renee Clarke found herself opposite her former graduate assistant at Kean, Rutgers-Newark head coach Patti Clarke. After dropping the opener 5-2 to the Scarlet Raiders in their opener, the Garnet held on for a tough 6-5 victory in the nightcap as both mentor and protégée split on the day.

Langhorne, PA – Behind a two-hit shutout shutout from Melissa O’Connor in Game 1 and a record-setting offensive outburst in Game 2, the Swarthmore softball team swept a doubleheader from the homestanding Crimson Eagles of Philadelphia Biblical on Tuesday. After O’Connor struck out a career-best 13 in the opener, a 9-0 Garnet victory, the bats were the story of the nightcap as Swarthmore sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning and opened up a 13-0 lead en route to a 17-3 victory.

Softball Shuts Out Southern Vermont to Cap 5-3 Spring Break
Myrtle Beach, SC – In 2011, the Swarthmore softball team needed until April 7th to pick up its fifth win of the season. After splitting its final two games in Myrtle Beach, the Garnet will return home with a 5-3 record and off to its best start in over a decade. On the first true-spring day of the team’s South Carolina trip with the temperature finally reaching 70, Swarthmore dropped Thursday’s opener 4-0 to Eastern before blanking Southern Vermont 10-0.

Softball Splits Second Straight Doubleheader in Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach, SC – With the beach, the crab legs, and the way she's been hitting, junior Kate Smayda will never want to leave South Carolina. The Swarthmore centerfielder continued her torrid start on Wednesday going 4-9 with a double and a home run as the Garnet went 1-1 for the second consecutive day at the Snowbird Tournament, defeating Bluefield College (VA) 8-0 before falling to St. Joseph’s (NY) 4-1.

Softball Splits on Day Two From Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Leading off the bottom of the first, Katherine Smayda ’13 hooked a curve-ball around the right-field pole for what should have been her second homerun in as many days. But after rounding the bases and greeting her teammates at home, Smayda was sent back to the plate when the umpires ruled that the ball had gone foul before leaving the park. That run proved the difference as the Garnet dropped the second-game of Tuesday’s double-header 5-4 to King’s after defeating Penn College 9-0 in the opener.

Softball Dominant in Season-Opening Victories
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – In her freshman season, Sarina Lowe '14 was hardly known as a strikeout pitcher, recording just five in over thirty innings of work. But buoyed by a Sunday night rack-of-ribs dinner, the sophomore struck out 12 batters in the 2012 Swarthmore softball season-opener as the Garnet (2-0) defeated SUNY IT 6-2 at the Snowbird Softball Tournament. Swarthmore completed its opening day with a 9-5 victory over Immaculata.

ORANGE, Calif. - The Swarthmore softball team (0-2) held two early leads on Monday against the Chapman Panthers (4-9) but the Panthers offense proved too much as the Garnet would drop both games, 10-2 and 4-1. Senior Kira Kern led the Garnet at the plate three of its four hits and scoring two of Swat's three runs between the two games.
