Fords Rally Past Garnet Lax 7-6
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-7) scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take a 6-5 lead over visiting rival Haverford, but the Fords stormed back in the fourth, scoring the period's only two goals to en route to a narrow 7-6 victory over the Garnet on Senior Day from Clothier Field Stadium.
Six different players found the back of the net for the Garnet, as sophomore Max Hubbard, sophomore John Bukawyn, freshman Wes Marcik and departing seniors Tyler Bradshaw, Gavin Musynske and Anthony Phalen all scored. Bradshaw also finished with two assists.
Suiting up in the Garnet & Grey for the final time, senior goalie Kevin Friedenberg finished with 11 saves and three ground balls.
Max Hjlem (2 goals, 3 assists) led the way for the Fords, who clinched a Centennial Conference playoff appearance with the win.
A goal from Haverford's Andrew Kim a little over two minutes into the second half gave the Fords a 5-2 lead, and it looked as if Haverford had firmly seized control of the important contest.
But with a big crowd on hand for Senior Day, Swat gave the home fans something to cheer about, scoring four unanswered goals over the remainder of the third period, as Phalen's goal - with an assist from fellow senior Bradshaw - with :57 seconds left in the third gave the Garnet the unlikely 6-5 lead heading into the fourth.
With the season on the line, Haverford's defense stepped up to play in the final period, while offense came through with just enough to edge the Garnet in the final minutes. Haverford's Myles Monaghan netted the equalizer with 13:37 left to play, while Zack Cohen hit what turned out to be the game winner with 10:02 to play. Haverford played keep-away in the final minutes hanging on for the 7-6 win.
The Fords benefited from three man-up goals, compared to none for Swat.
Bradshaw finished his impressive senior campaign with 32 goals.
The loss concludes the 2010 season for the Garnet.
