Men's Basketball Drops Season Finale to Haverford, 75-52

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Homestanding Haverford used a balanced scoring attack that saw four players reach double figures to defeat the Swarthmore College men's basketball team 75-52 on Saturday afternoon from Gooding Arena.

Freshman Jay Kober finished off his impressive first-year campaign in style, leading the Garnet with 13 points coming off the bench. Sophomore Will Gates added eight points and eights rebounds. He finishes the  2010-11 season with 457 points, which ranks seventh in program history. Sophomore Jordan Martinez added nine points.

Senior Sam Permutt led all scorers with 17 points. He was followed by Cam Baker(16), Ian Goldberg (12), Louis Cipriano(12) in double figures for the Fords, who advanced to the Centennial Conference playoffs with the victory and Ursinus' loss to Muhlenberg.

Hitting close to 50 percent of the its shots for the game, the Fords build a double-digit lead early in the first half and never looked back. The Fords used a 15-0 run over an eight-minute stretch to build a 24-7 lead with 8:11 remaining in the first half. A jumper from Gates right before the half gave the Garnet some hope cutting the lead to 38-25 heading into the locker room.

The Fords ended any thoughts of the Garnet comeback early in the second half. Back-and-forth for opening minutes of the second stanza, Haverford extended the lead to 20 points on a Baker layup at the 10:06 mark. From that point, the Fords' lead never dipped below 20 points en route to the 75-52 win.

Senior Ryan Carmichael scored eight points in his final game as a member of the Garnet.

Swarthmore concludes the 2010-11 season with a 6-19 (3-15) record.
