Field Hockey Thumps Immaculata, 5-1
IMMACULATA, Pa. - Juniors Sophia Agathis and Julia Tallarico each scored a pair of goals and junior Katie Teleky also added a tally as the Swarthmore College field hockey team (5-7, 2-4) got back on track with a 5-1 road victory over Immaculata on Thursday afternoon.
Agathis also added a defensive save as part of her impressive all-around game.
The resounding win snaps the Garnet's three-game losing skid.
Coming off Tuesday's tough one-goal loss to Gwynedd-Mercy, the Garnet wasted no time against the Mighty Macs (6-8 ), scoring two goals within the opening 18 minutes of play. Teleky got the Garnet on the board first with her sixth goal of the season, giving Swat the 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute. A little over two minutes later, Agathis struck for the Garnet off a double assist from junior Allison Ranshous and sophomore Anne Rosenblatt to make it 2-0.
With the Garnet still ahead 2-0 and into the second half, homestanding Immaculata made its charge, cutting the deficit in half with a goal from Krisitin Yoder in the 39th minute.
But 2-1 was as close as the Mighty Macs would get, as the Garnet rattled off three goals over the next eight minutes to turn the match into a rout. Agathis added an unassisted goal in the 43rd minute while Tallarico provided the dagger with goals in the 45th (off a penalty stroke) and 47th minutes (off a penalty corner).
In goal for the Garnet, sophomore Gabriella Capone made two saves to earn the win.
With their goals, both Agathis and Teleky both reached the 50-point plateau for their Garnet careers.
Swarthmore made the most of its scoring chances, tallying five goals on just nine shots.
The four-goal margin of victory matches the Garnet's largest of the 2011 season.
The Garnet return to Centennial play on Saturday with an important match-up with McDaniel. Play is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
