Nielsen Garners All-America Laurels at NCAA T&F Championships

Sarah Nielsen was named an All-American after placing eighth in the mile at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

COMPLETE RESULTS

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior Sarah Nielsen of the Swarthmore College women's track & field tea earned All-America laurels by placing eighth in the mile at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, March 14 at the JDL Fast Track.

Nielsen, who was seeded 12th entering the championship meet, was among the top eight runners for nearly the entire race before eventually punching in a time of 5:06.57. The junior was competing in her second NCAA Championship event after qualifying for the 1,500-meter run during the 2014 outdoor season.

Senior Alison Maxwell of Middlebury hit the tape first in 4:56.17, edging out Hannah Chappel-Dick of Eastern Mennonite and Maryann Gong of MIT. The field of 10 competitors also included runners from Cornell College, St. Thomas, Carnegie Mellon and Wheaton (Ill.).

With today's eighth-place finish, Nielsen became the fifth student-athlete in the history of the Swarthmore College women's track & field program to earn All-America recognition indoors. The others are Desiree Peterkin in the triple jump (1998 & 1999), Catherine Laine in the triple jump (1998), Imo Akpan in the 400-meter dash (2002) and Caitlin Mullarkey in the mile (2009).
